Clothing tips for your personal branding photo shoot

The number one question I get asked when someone books a branding photo shoot is “what do I wear?”

And I totally get it. You want to be comfortable, look fashionable, but most of all you want your ideal clients to like you! And as a society what we choose to wear can show so much of ourselves to people ever saying a word.

I’ve definitely been in the situation the day before a photoshoot, worrying about what to wear, and if I should’ve bought something new or if the old things in my wardrobe will do the job 🙈

So if like me, you’d like to avoid the stress of knowing what to wear, I’ve listed some of my favourite tips that I’ve learnt along the way for how to dress for your upcoming branding photo shoot.

Think about your brand.

Whatever your brand style, you should be choosing clothing that can convey that to your clients. Think about it, if you’re a Fitness Coach, you’re probably not going to be rocking up to your shoot in a suit. However, if you’re a business professional wearing yoga leggings to a branding photoshoot, it’s not gonna sit quite right either, is it.

Also think about your colours. Is your brand bright and beautiful or is it more muted and neutral? Your clothing is probably going to reflect this.

Avoid clothing with brands and logos

Brands & logos all over your clothes, unless they are of your own business, are going to be very distracting in your images. It’s best to avoid them.

Think about the location of your photo shoot

Will what you’re wearing match the environment or shoot location? With lifestyle photographs like these, you want the images to be believable. So wearing your Sunday best when you’re meant to be sharing behind-the-scenes in your floristry business, probably won’t look quite right.

Also think about the colour scheme of the location. You either want to be in contrast to it, so you stand out. Or you want to compliment it, which will give a calming, consistent feel to the images.

Bring different clothing options

This one is especially important if we’re also shooting in a couple of different locations. Bringing different outfits, in different styles gives you more versatility. More versatility means more shots to choose from, and more variety on your website and your social media.

Add layers

By adding layers to your outfit, it adds interest and movement to your shots, whilst also giving us the chance to remove different pieces of clothing to give a different look to the images.
